Sitting On A Yoga Ball At Work
Olivia Luz
If you sit on a stability ball at work move cautiously when reaching for an item on your desk to avoid falls.
And sitting on a ball all day might well be too much for most people. According to a 2008 study performing clerical work at a desk while sitting on an exercise ball burns about four more calories an hour than the same activity in a chair or roughly 30 extra. Rocking side to side and back and forth on the ball isolates the pelvis and works the lower back abdominal muscles and hips. This week i replaced my office chair with an exercise ball.
On the ball safety. Make sure you use the right size of stability ball which is one that leaves your knees at a 90 degree angle when seated. Even rocking on the ball with small movements causes the muscles to work together to regain balance and so further challenges the muscles. Steer clear of sitting on the ball to lift weights.
Try sitting on the ball with feet on the floor and arms crossed across the chest. Stability balls can cause injuries if used improperly or while not paying attention. This will not increase core stability or cause the core to work harder but rather increase spinal compression especially if you re sitting. Aside from being fun to bounce around on while blogging sitting on a ball over a regular desk chair has other benefits.
