The best sleeping position just after your surgery is sleeping on your back. The most comfortable position only helps if you have done most of the other nine steps. Sleeping on your stomach will also put pressure on the top of the knee where it s most sensitive. If you are not experiencing difficulty achieving full knee extension you may prefer to sleep in other positions.
You should make sure that your operative leg stays as straight as possible to avoid hypertension of the knee and keep proper blood flow to the surgery site if you are sleeping on your back put the pillow under your calf and knee. The best position to sleep in after a total knee replacement is flat on your back with a pillow under your heel. Find a comfortable position to sleep after knee replacement surgery. It s a good idea to keep two pillows or more between your legs.
Don t cross your legs or shuffle either of them forward. Sleep like this for at least six weeks. Try to sleep on the opposite side of the knee replacement. This is because this position allows the knee to remain in full extension throughout the night.
