The indigenous african languages of south africa which are official and therefore dominant can be divided into two geographical zones with nguni languages being predominant in the south eastern third of the country indian ocean coast and sotho tswana languages being predominant in the northern third of the country located further inland as also in botswana and lesotho.
Each province uses english afrikaans and the most predominant african language in their province for official documents. Because the english spoken in south africa is derived from the british settlers who immigrated to the country en mass in the 1820s schools teach the language based on the british grammatical system. Sepedi also known as sesotho sa leboa sesotho setswana siswati tshivenda xitsonga afrikaans english isindebele isixhosa and isizulu. However as a spoken language english has taken on several peculiarities as it has become mixed with a variety of accents and words taken from other languages.
For centuries south africa s official languages were european dutch english afrikaans. Less than 2 of south african citizens speak a first language that is not an official language. However most of the people can speak more than one language.
