The red winged blackbird agelaius phoeniceus is a passerine bird of the family icteridae found in most of north america and much of central america it breeds from alaska and newfoundland south to florida the gulf of mexico mexico and guatemala with isolated populations in western el salvador northwestern honduras and northwestern costa rica.
Female has gray head and gray olive upperparts and white underparts with yellow on flanks and tail. It is found in open woodlands and tall trees along rivers and streams. Black base center form t shaped mark on orange tail. The yellowish green dark winged females can be even harder to spot until you key in on this bird s chick burr.
Male breeding plumage is a brilliant lemon yellow on throat breast belly and back with a black crown and black wings. Long square and jet black tail. The belly is white. They have gray head and underparts with olive back and wings and dark gray tail.
The forehead is black as are the wings which also have white markings. The american goldfinch has a small head and bill and a short tail though the wings are long. They re also one of the most frustratingly hard to find as they stay high in the forest canopy singing rich burry songs. This is a small songbird with black wings and tail.

In winter the bird is brown with black wings. Medium active warbler with black upperparts and hood distinctive orange red patches on wings sides and long fanned tail and white underparts. The rest of the plumage of the male is orange red and that of the female is olive with gray on the front and back. Wings are black with orange shoulder patches and strongly white edged feathers that appear as bars.
Adults have a pointed blue gray bill and dark wings.
